Establish Your Color Palate
This is very easy if you have a program like photoshop that allows you to select any color on your picture down to the pixels. Use the eye dropper tool in photoshop and select different shades/colors from your face, hair, eyes etc. If you want to create a full body caricature also pick colors from your clothes, shoes, accesories etc.

For the head begin adding in the details of your face, like nose, ears, eyes, eyebrows, mouth etc. An excellent tip is to play on your most distinguishable features. This will make your cartoon resemble you much more. For the body begin drawing in the details like lapels, ties, logos, wrinkles etc.

The final step!
Add the color
Once you have it drawn out, begin adding in the color. Remember to work from the color palete you already set up. Take notice of the different colors and shades on your face. The more color and shades you use the more depth your cartoon portrait will have.
